I started reading comics in December of 2012. So it has been over a year into this new hobby. I didn’t read comics growing up, so this past year has been a year of discovery of what I like and dislike.
I spent the year trying to read some of the classic graphic novels that people have recommended to me (Watchmen, Batman: Hush, The Long Halloween, Daredevil by Frank Miller, etc.) There are so many great books out there to read.
I have tried to read some of the newer comics currently being published from the big 2 – DC Comics & Marvel. I haven’t had time to explore the vast amount of comics from the other publishers. I am looking forward to exploring those in 2014.
So with all of this in mind, here are my top 10 comics of 2013…
10. Justice League
This was the first comic I read in the New 52 series. I loved the back-in-forth between Batman and Green Lantern. Throne of Atlantis and Trinity War were great stories. Looking forward to reading Forever Evil.
While Aquaman is still the butt of many jokes, his stories in the run by Geoff Johns have been fantastic.
8. All X-Men / Uncanny X-Men
My buddy, JR Forestaros, recommended this one to me. Love the time-traveling original X-men decided to stay in the current time mixing with the current X-men. And Cyclops leading the Uncanny X-Men – good stuff!
7. Thor, God of Thunder
Jason Arron’s story of the God Butcher was great. Looking forward to reading more of this one.
6. The Walking Dead
Awesome. Love it! This is the only comic that my son, Jacob will read. We always are looking forward to the next graphic novel to arrive.
5. Green Arrow
Green Arrow issues 1-16 are garbage. But starting at issue #17 – Jeff Lemire begins writing an awesome story arc that takes Oliver Queen around the world to discover the secrets of his father. Great story.
4. Superior Spider-man
This story is entriquing to me – Doc Octopus’ final scheme – to switch bodies with Peter Parker – and he is successful. But wait, Peter Parker dies in the body of Doc Octopus – so, now Doctor Octopus is Spider-man. Wow! Very cool story.
This comic caught me by surprise. I didn’t care for the Hawkeye character from the Avenger’s movie – but this Hawkeye, written by Matt Fraction is so different. If you are looking for a fun and clever take at a superhero – I highly recommend this one.
Scott Synder continues to bring us one great story after another. From the Night of the Owls, to Death of the Family, and now Zero Year. My favorite comic from DC Comics New 52 line.
I have thoroughly enjoyed Mark Waid’s run on Daredevil. This comic is getting relaunched in 2014 as Daredevil moves from NYC to San Francisco. Check it out!
There you go – my top 10.
